Clarification on games with duplicate names
« on: Today at 01:00:09 pm »
Hi, I recently submitted an edit to Marathon (the upcoming one) to change its name to Marathon (2025), similar to how Doom (2016) is disambiguated.

The edit was rejected with the following message:
Quote
Incorrect Formatting. Descriptor is not required as there are no other entries within the category with the same name.. Please see the VGCollect Style Guide or visit the Forums to clear up any listing questions.

Seeing as the page for the 2025 game already includes an erroneous link to the 1994 Macintosh game of the same name under "Also on Platforms" (and conversely, that game now claims to "also" be on PS5), I'm not clear what I did incorrectly here. Can someone please explain what was incorrect and how to separate these entries properly?

Edit: Sorry, I think this should have been posted in Video Game Database Discussion instead of Site Feedback, if a mod wants to move it.

Descriptors (name attachments that are used in parentheses such as (example)) should only be used to prevent more than one entry within a specific category from having the same name.

Descriptors
Descriptors are used to differentiate similar releases where the result would be two items with the same name in a category.

So, since there is only one entry within PlayStation Network (PS5) [NA] titled Marathon, no descriptor should be used. Entries like Doom (1993) and (Doom 2016) are only formatted this way because both share the same base entry name and exist in the same category.

Also, there is no erroneous link on 242246. They're two different games completely, but that is how the Also on Platforms feature is designed to work. Is this how the feature should function? Probably not, but it's working as intended.

In the future, please post to this topic regarding rejected edits.
